Dr. Kohl received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame.  He then attended dental school at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he was inducted into Omega Kamma Upsilon honor society.  He subsequently received his Masters Degree in Orthodontics from the State University of New York at Buffalo.​

Dr. Kohl lives in Bemus Point with his wife Mary, two daughters, and his dog Winston.
